Whilst one of you has jumped off the planet and the other one never has any free time any more I've been plotting this project regardless.

At the moment I have a suitable pole for use as a boom. I need to make some modifications (it needs some rings of some sort to corral the cable that will run down it) but I've at least got it.
However for the boom to be properly useful the sound person needs to be free to roam independent of the camera. To do that an external recorder is required. As it happens I have an old, barely used, 20GB MP3 player. It has both mic-in, line-in, and a built in microphone. Now I have no intention of using the built-in mic, I only mention it because it's indicative of the work that went into making this device suitable for the job I need it to do.

Lastly I need to build a microphone pre-amp. This step isn't really necessary for the shotgun mic but for the SM58s it seems required. That shouldn't be too much work although it may be quite a lot of effort. I'm working on it!

Anyway, what this amounts to is a relatively small, light setup that can be carried by anyone who's running sound. I've just finished ordering the cables required to fill in the gaps so hopefully then everything will be good to go, pre-amp aside.
Then I need to recruit a sound person. That's a job for another day though, methinks.
