I think it sucks. I associate it with everyone sitting down to eat dinner in front of the "telly", then all going to their separate rooms and watching some more. Disgusting.

Oh yes, urgh.. It's the worst thing - having a TV in one's living room... Utterly ghetto..

No offense. Not really.

But what if the main purpose of the TV is to watch film?

I saw a nice 20" LCD TV for about £350..

Yeah it's ok to use them for films, and Horizon and other similar programs (Sky or whatever), but all this Neighbours and East Enders bollocks is as mindless as it is puerile.

Nice.....but I still think that CTR's are the best. They don't deteriorate and have better picture quality, and they're getting thinner and wider, and (I think) they're the cheapest. It's definately CTR all the way for me.

EDIT: shitting wanking buggering fuck-jockey. I meant CRT of course! biggrin.gif

CRT, heh, Cathode Ray Tube.

Well, let me offer the counter argument - LCDs and TFTs consume less power, thereby causing less polution. They also emit far less radiation.

You're right, CRT TVs are cheaper, however, when buying a TV, something you don't generally replace regularly, I reckon its worth a little extra cost.

LCDs are also thinner and lighter, thereby taking up less space, making them easier to wall-mount or move.

That and LCD TVs are just more swish, heh.
I'd rather have my miniITX system, running MythTV, plugged into an LCD TV, nestling next to an Xbox than I would a CRT one.

I agree with the above, LCD's are just cooler than CRT's, besides aren't CRT TV's meant to be bad for your health? that's why some of the schools over here have been changing to them. health risk and all that.

LCD's consume less power, thus cutting down (a fraction) on pollution, but what about the polution caused in making the thing? It has a plastic screen, and does not last as long, meaning you'll have to buy another one soon anyway - more pollution!.

At the moment LCD's are thinner, but CRT's are catching up and getting thinner too. I think the best current attempt is just six inches deep over 40 inches corner to corner, which considering the angel the electron beam would have to swing through (approx. 147 degrees, negating the other diagonal), is not a bad effort. Also, how often do you move a 40 inch TV? You're only going to wall mount it once, and there it stays! CRT's are more difficult to steal, too.

There is very little health risk from CRT's. Just as in an LCD, the outer screne is positively charged to soke up all the left-over electrons. This is why it crackles when you run your hand over it after it has been turned off - it keeps the screne charged for a fraction longer after it turns of the electron gun.

I admit that LCD's are prettier to look at, but I find that CRT's are nicer to watch, just as decent quality records are nicer to listen to on a decent turntable - there is something pleasingly analouge about them.

Also, crack it open and you have a funky wee electron gun to fry things with.

But LCDs still have higher bling value and are more impressive.
How often am I going to wall mount it?
Well considering that I'm going to be moving between Stockholm and other places, feasibly more often than I'd like to wall mount a CRT one, heh.

Less power consumption = cheaper for my pocket.

I'm willing to sacrifice a little quality if it means +1 impressiveness, heh.
CRT is just *so* 1990s..

LCD = liquid crystal display
CRT = Cathode Ray Tube

Wikipedia for further explanations

Also, new drawing.
Not fantastic, but still.

Opinion?

Yeah, the perspective of the room is utterly fucked, but then again, we've got to make mistakes to learn from them.
